When I first ran across this on Jay-Z’s Life and Times site, I was both drawn to the concept of immortalizing such an apparatus of music history and also thinking “Don’t all boom boxes look the same though?” I may have been born in the 80s, but started paying attention in the 90s; so I’m of the walkman era and boom boxes just weren’t an everyday occurrence.
Having looked through a few pages and the video below tis crazy some of the styles that were put out back in the day; and that for most part they are just going to go to waste. So shout outs are in order for Lyle Owerko for his collection and putting together this fantastic book.
Get your palm fronds ready as the kings approach the throne. Kanye & Jay released “Otis” onto the world yesterday afternoon via radio & Jay’s Life and Times. Featuring a perfectly placed sample of Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness” the two go in on some old school hip hop shit; trading verses, playing off each other’s words, just hip hop in a pure form, and they’re stunting all the way through. swag.
I just got my copy of Theophilus’ debut Timesz Are Weird These Days and it is fucking stellar. “Girls Girls $” is one of the many standout tracks on the album and its fitting it gets the video treatment, though wasn’t expecting this by any means. It’s just insanity, so I’ll let Theophilus tell it:
This video was built on the hype and importance of the internet. NYC legends and hotspots, twitter personalities, quotes and everything hyped weather good or bad. I was intrigued by this character my friend Ben Solomon had on his avatar and approached him via twitter and email to talk about a concept. He came over an we sketched out a few things and brainstormed. This is the modern day Waldo. Can u spot anyone? #isityou?
Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: A midget, The Outlaw, and Grieves walk into a club . . . Actually I’ll let Grieves tell it.
I caught up with Grieves via T-Mobile signal while he was out in Portland, a few days before the Rhymesayers Soundset Festival. We got into Together/Apart(released yesterday so pick it up, HERE), the process for the new album, and definitely a lot more. . . Oh yeah and that thing about the midget & The Outlaw.
@bjones21: I’m here chiming in for the phoner today. @Grievesmusic: Yeah I’m into it. I was supposed to do another one before you guys, but they’re not as punctual as you are. You’re at 12:20pm on the dot.
BJ: HAHA yeah I just noticed that myself. Ya know we try to keep it together; make sure you guys get your shit done & same here. G: I appreciate it more than you can possibly know.
BJ: Where you at right now? G: I am in the basement of some college, in Portland.
BJ: You have a performance there then, headed to Soundset? G: Nah I got a lady friend out here, and she goes to college and wanted me to sit in on her ideology class; and I told her I didn’t want to. So I went to Seattle’s Best and got a Chai Tea while she’s in class, and now I’m in some weird basement, while she has a meeting with her study group and i do my rap interviews.
BJ: Alright not bad, is she just a lady friend? Just handshakes and that’s all? G: Yeah just a lady friend.
House of Blues Sunset and Tech N9ne; pretty epic shit right there. When the opportunity to interview one of the most talented and intricate choppers in hip hop, you gotta do it. We caught up with Tech before his performance at H.O.B. to discuss the new album, new fans, and for him to do what he does best, chop.
Head over to Tech N9ne’s official page to see when he’ll be in your town & pick up his new album All 6s & 7s cuz you’re prob the only person on your block not bumping it right now.
If you don’t know who The Park is you may have seen them on stage with Big K.R.I.T., Freddie Gibbs, The Righteous Movement, and Jesse Boykins III. Though you should know the collective puts together their own compositions and their nothing less than you’d expect out the talent that resides in The Park.
To quote Frank Ocean’s “Novacane” – “Some visionary shit”. This video is fresh as hell. Great concept and executed perfectly to an amazing track that marries obsession, sex, lust, and young love into a comedic and ultimately haunting video.
Picked up from the man @johngotty
Follow for more visionary shit @social8gency
Dee-1 is one of those guys that remind me of folks I knew in highschool everyone says after a few years “I’m just waiting for him to pop up with something big.” I’m still waiting with Dee but in my mind there is no doubt that he will/should be getting his. The guy is too talented and really has something to say to not come up in a major way.
If you need more follow the homie @dee1music & make sure to download his tapes, right here.
Nardwuar catches Curren$y again, this time on his turf in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada! Oh man I’m posting this without even watching it yet, that’s how much I know Nardwuar and Curren$y are can’t miss material.
Check out Nard’s interview with Tech N9ne, here.
How much do you love the Nard? Let me know @bjones21
Odd Future affiliate Frank Ocean just released the video for “Acura Integurl” though not coming off nostalgia, ULTRA this is a fresh track nonetheless. Scoop this off of the 63 track Lonny Breaux Tape floating out there. If he can get one together for “Swim Good” & “Novacane” I’d give him my first born.
